Old Naples art lovers fill their 1950s home with art and eff...

NAPLES — On a large city lot on the east side of Gulfshore BoulevardNorth stands a seemingly modest house typical of early 50sarchitecture. The front lawn, an expansive green carpet surroundingindigenous palms and other native plantings, leads to an elongatedfront porch where a welcoming flag proclaims SCasananas in boldgreen lettering below a stylized pineapple logo.

The name a Spanish-language contraction of casa, or house, andananas, pineapple and comfortable seating set the tone fordaily sunset watching by owner Richard L. Tooke and his partner,Charles L. Marshall, Jr. A glimpse of the sunset may be a bitharder now, but when it was built there was only a small pondacross the boulevard that permitted a clear view of the beach andthe Gulf of Mexico.

Tooke purchased the property in 1993 following the death of hisaunt, Mamie Tooke, who was Naples and Florida"s firstfemale bank president. But it wasn"t until 1999, after retiringfrom a 30-year career with the Museum of Modern Art in New YorkCity, that Tooke relocated to Naples, along with Marshall.

The pair had met in New York City in 1960 and within months hadestablished an enduring friendship based in part on their sharedinterests in the graphic and performing arts. Marshall, a Topeka,Kansas, native, was longtime architect for the New York-basedPresbyterian Board of National Missions.

Inside and out, their Old Naples property literally breathes art.

The diminutive, 109-square-foot galley kitchen is a chef"sdreamscape, and the art starts here. K. Auster"s SPineappleExpress painting, and SPortrait of a Red Pepper S by Hyunsoohang above one entry door. There"s a hand-tinted carrots etchingby Larry Glasson. Two years ago the two hired designer Susan Oakleyto push the post-World War II home"s kitchen into the newmillennium. Now, frosted sliding glass doors front the illuminatedpantry, where custom slots accommodate a MoMa stepladder, a smallwine cooler, and shelving for glassware and the usual pantrycontents.

After shopping for appliances, the three realized that onlyEuropean appliances work in such limited space. Their absolutefavorite is a combo Miele Sspeed oven an all-in-onemicrowave, broiler and convection oven no larger than a standardmicrowave.

Coffee fanciers may covet the glitzy red Illy espresso machine withits accompanying blue-and-white cups and saucers. Compact stainlesssteel appliances predominate, as does gleaming stainless steel openshelving, wall paneling, back splash and exhaust hood over thesurface cooker. Counter tops are honed limestone and cupboardfronts are fashioned from natural, high-gloss beech. Upswing doorson high cupboards encircle the room. Tooke refers to matchingphotographs to efficiently locate their contents.

Dinnerware and pots and pans are stored in several levels ofunder-counter drawers. That leaves abundant space for a picturewindow above the stainless steel sinks providing a view out towardthe emerald lawn.

The original cork kitchen floor was severely damaged during 1960Hurricane Donna. During the renovation, Oakley found natural corktiles that, like bamboo flooring, are a renewable resource that"skind to feet and legs. The tiles extend from the kitchen though thedining room, which had been extended by 8 feet to the east in 1986to incorporate a screened porch into indoor living space. The tilesSfloat on concrete, and plain old tap water and a chamois mopkeep them in tip-top condition, Marshall says.

A large picture window brings the outdoors in for both diners andthose who lounge in the multi-purpose room, Many of the furnishingsin this area are vintage collectibles some dating back to the20s including seating, coffee and side tables, lightingfixtures, and vases and clocks discovered in antique shops, fleamarkets, garage sales and the like. Both Marshall and Tooke havediscerning eyes for precious pieces with bargain price tags.Standout names among the furniture makers include Mies van derRohe, Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen.

Here as throughout the entire house, white walls showcase masses ofworks by more than 75 artists in the eclectic Tooke-Marshallcollection. WORKS by both nationally and internationally recognizedmasters are featured. Interspersed among these are Marshall"s ownwatercolors, Tooke"s oils and photos, and local creations fromthe studios of MUMTAZ (Nancy Gifford), Jo-Ann Lizio and former arearesident Christopher Poehlmann. Jonathan Green is represented, asis the late Robert Rauschenberg.

The living room is located up several original, wide oak steps andbeyond a long, low white brick divider Splanted with syntheticgrass squares from Michaels Arts & Crafts on Pine Ridge Road. Therectangular room extends from the front door between a player pianoon the right and a working fireplace on the left and carries onthrough to an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling glass sliders facingthe east garden.

A brilliant blue, trapezoidal wall panel stands out above tall, glass sliders to an outdoor terrace that"s also accessible fromthe master bedroom. The blue accent replicates the blue of theupholstery fabric of a nearby Florence Knoll chair. Cadmium redpanels on the opposite wall mark another departure from thehome"s otherwise stark white walls. There are no curtains ordrapes anywhere in the house  only shades.

The warm oak floors continue on throughout the remainder of themain house, including an art-enhanced narrow hallway with anold-fashioned telephone niche. Marshall explains that it wasreferred to as the Scommunications center back when the housewas built. The original 1950s full bath and 10-by-12-foot guestroom cum library is where Marshall stores his collection of 130piano rolls and antique replica metal automobile piggy banks.

The master bedroom suite showcases yet more art work along withfamily photos and mementoes. Those includes Tooke"s entirelylocal shell collection, which contains brilliantly hued tree snailshells. Another small, ensuite bedroom with pullman kitchen andMurphy bed generally functions as working office space and isobviously the home"s nerve center.

The north garden is a fruit salad of plantings, with mangos, tangerines, oranges, bananas and calamondins in profusion duringtheir respective seasons.

Art, however, dominates the north and east gardens.Pennsylvania-based artist Steve Tobin"s massive, recentlyacquired SWhite Rainbow Root dominates views from indoors andout. Weighing some 800 pounds, the painted steel sculpture is atonce both flowing and forceful.

A small, bright red Tobin metal sculpture nestles in a bed ofliving plants as does one of his large, signature Sexplodedclaybowls. Wind chimes and Solari bells are suspended above. With Tookeand Marshall in it, the house is now fully air conditioned. Still, ceiling fans, built-in screened louvers and a funky 40s hassock fancome in handy during transitional seasons. That 50"s design iswhat they most love about their house, Marshall succinctly andemphatically says. Tooke agrees.

SFrom the very first time I saw the house in 1956 when I stayedwith my aunt for several months, I immediately knew that it was agood, very livable Florida home.

House of bamboo

The Sullivans tried making two or three chairs from commerciall bamboo flooring they bought expressly for the project, but eachchair took more than 50 hours to complete.

“Since the chairs sold for $200, we just couldn't doit,” Joanne Sullivan said. “We kind of scrapped theidea.”

Joanne Sullivan decided to experiment with the unused scraps ofbamboo flooring. She took home a slab of flooring and created acutting board. Impressed with the board's resilience and look, theSullivans decided to make about 20 cutting boards that year todistribute as Christmas gifts for their family, Joanne Sullivansaid.

On a whim, they took a handful of bamboo cutting boards to anArizona craft fair to showcase alongside their specialty chairs.Joanne Sullivan was worried they would sell out of their plannedChristmas presents, so they slapped the cutting boards with a pricetag they assumed no one would pay – around $80 per board. Within two hours, all of the boards were gone.

“This was way before green,” Tom Sullivan said, referring to the increase in eco-friendly products on the market.“We were on the crest of the wave. We're pretty good atmarket trends. Being in the craft fairs is being in the trenches. We went home with literally a shaking excitement. We knew we had atiger by the tail.”

They purchased large quantities of commercial bamboo flooring andwent to work creating a line of cutting boards. Eventually, theytraveled to China to partner with a manufacturer who could producethe boards in larger quantities.

Later, they branched out to design and create other products andnow have a line of about 200 bamboo products, from kitchenware tocountertops, sinks and chairs.

Totally Bamboo products sell in Crate & Barrel; Bed, Bath &Beyond; Macy's; and Dillard's, Joanne Sullivan said. The cuttingboards are their best sellers.

The Sullivans say they are proud of the fact that they design andtest their products in-house.

“It's a quality issue,” Tom Sullivan said. “Wedidn't build to sell cheap. We're sticklers on quality.”

Pearls, papers inspire art

Pearls, papers inspire art.UA's Emily Davis Gallery challenges jewelers upstairs, offers newsas art downstairs. It's all on display until Oct. 4.By Dorothy Shinn.Beacon Journal art & architecture critic.Published on Monday, Jul 21, 2008.The Sermon on the Mount ends with the admonition ''neither cast yeyour pearl necklace pearls before swine'' — you should share things of valueonly with those who'll appreciate them.Through Oct. 4, the University of Akron Mary Schiller Myers Schoolof Art's Emily Davis Gallery has cast pearls before a constellationof jewelers, asking them to create works in response to thishistorically precious object, the results on view in the uppergallery.Meanwhile, in the lower gallery is Idiomsyncretic,by Oregon artist Pat Boas, who bases much of her work on the pagesof the New York Times.Boas examines the play between word-as-image and image-as word.Over the past decade, she has examined the coexistence of sense andnonsense in language through her series on the Times. In one series, Alphabet (NYT 10/01/01),she examines the Jan. 1, 2001, front page on 26 sheets of silktissue, each sheet printing the page with only one letter of thealphabet, as it's found on the page. Anji Bemben proves that it pays to have great hair

If Bemben wins one of Tin Man's nine possible Emmies, she'll thankdirector Nick Willing for saying: "I want your pearl necklace creativity to beboundless."It sure has been. She surfsin Costa Rica, but stopped photographing sharks after a brokenSCUBA mouthpiece left her 80 feet under water with no air in herlungs."I did those things to challenge my mind, to see what I was capableof," said Bemben, whose movie credit list is longer than arms shehardens with tennis and Body Co. Thaksin's wife awaits ruling on tax evasion case

Pojaman, known for her taste in designer clothes and coifed hair, wore a blue blouse and pearl necklace for the court appearance. Sheand Thaksin did not comment to reporters..More than 300 police were deployed in the area amid concerns ofpossible protests by both Thaksin'ssupporters and opponents..Thaksin was ousted after being accused of massive corruption andabuse of power during his two terms as prime minister. Fourcorruption cases have been filed in the courts against Thaksin, twoothers against his wife, and three cases against two of hischildren. Many others are under investigation..Thursday's case centers on a 1997 transfer of shares in ShinawatraComputer, the company that later became Shin Corp. —Thailand's biggest telecommunications company — before it wassold in 2006 to a Singapore state-owned company for US$2.2 billion..The share transfer was valued at 738 million baht — aboutUS$22.2 million at the current exchange rate — and deemedtax-free. The family had listed the deal as a transfer of sharescarried out within the stock market, which is exempt from capitalgains taxes..After Thaksin's ouster, an investigation was launched into the dealthat prompted the family to change its story..Pojaman, through her lawyer, said she bought the shares from afamily maid and transferred them to her adopted brother, BhanapotDamapong, as a gift, which under Thai law is not taxable..Thailand's Assests Examination Committee determined last year, however, that a check issued to the maid was later deposited in anew bank account belonging to Thaksin's wife..The committee said Pojaman and her brother had misrepresented thenature of the transaction to avoid paying taxes and should pay backtaxes of about 546 million baht (US$16.4 million). Thaksin was notimplicated in the tax evasion case..Thaksin was known to have transferred shares in Shin Corp., histelecommunications empire, to his maid, chauffeur, relatives andothers to shed holdings before becoming prime minister in 2001 toskirt conflict of interest laws..Thaksin was deposed after months of street demonstrations inBangkok demanding he step down because of the allegations. Hereturned to Thailand earlier this year after his political alliesin the People's Power Party set up a coalition government.

Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama: Different styles, similar j...

Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama: Different styles, similar jewelry.3 hours ago.NEW YORK — Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama are at theopposite ends of the style spectrum. McCain is very proper inbrightly coloured dresses with matching jackets; Obama is moredramatic in bell sleeves with an occasional flash of cleavage.."There's no way they could be sisters and exchange clothes," saysimage consultant Ginger Burr. They do, however, have a sharedaffinity for bead necklaces, particularly pearls - and the chunkierthe better..Obama, just named to Vanity Fair's International Best Dressed Listalongside the likes of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Sarah JessicaParker, wore a single strand of large white pearls around her neckwith a purple dress and funky black belt when her husband claimedthe Democratic nomination..McCain paired earth-tone South Sea pearls with a brown jacket and,on another day, wore a funky baroque necklace with uneven-shapedpearls to complement a navy suit.."A chunky necklace needs a confident woman to carry it off," saysRae Ann Herman, Glamour magazine's accessories director. "Beads arestatement pieces.".She's not surprised, though, that McCain and Obama have taken towearing them because they both seem to be more style-conscious thanthe public is used to seeing in its president's wives - save JackieKennedy, another pearl wearer.."To me, pearls are Step 1 on what to wear if you want to become afirst lady," says stylist Mary Alice Stephenson. "Both Michelle andCindy are channelling Jackie O: They wear streamlined clothing withpearls.".Herman thinks the potential first ladies are taking cues from therunway, noting that chunky jewelry has made inroads with thefashion crowd over the past year.."We've seen so much statement jewelry - bigger necklaces, biggerbracelets, bigger earrings - and it always trickles down to allprice points," she says..They are also showing that they're savvy: "You use accessories tomake your wardrobe more exciting. If you're not buying new clothes, then you're investing in new jewelry, even if it's costumejewelry.".By choosing pearls and beads instead of diamonds, Stephenson adds,Obama and McCain are avoiding questions about cost..She thinks they may have learned from Hollywood stars theimportance of incorporating a"Wow!" moment into each day's outfit- and that it's best to wear it from the waist up. The added bonusof the necklace is that it draws onlookers' eyes toward the face.."You can look severe and bare if you're not wearing a necklace, which makes you look feminine and elegant," Stephenson says..Burr says that McCain sometimes successfully uses necklaces tolighten and brighten her face- counteracting some criticism thatshe looks too uptight..However, Burr didn't like a round, multicoloured pearl necklace that McCain paired with a green dress with a boat-shaped necklinethat served as the starting point for open pleats down the bodice.."A necklace should fit into the neckline of the dress. The greenwith the mixed pearls looked good, but the neckline is too high andthere's too much detail around it," she says..That said, pearls do look good on McCain, she says.."Some women default to pearls when they don't know what else to do.I don't think that's happening with her. She's using the necklaceto complete an outfit and give insight into her personality.".Burr recalls seeing Obama in black beads - a sign that she likesclothes with a little more drama and flair. She also likes to seeObama in white pearl earrings, but not necessarily necklaces.."I'm not sure if pearls are the best choice because I don't thinkof her as being traditional," she says.

UK plastic bag charging row erupts again

UK plastic bag charging row erupts again

By Helen Gilbert

Fears mandatory bag charging will be introduced despite industryprogress.30 July 2008 - An industry expert has warned the Government to stopinterfering around the issue of charging for plastics bagsfollowing media reports that customers will have to pay a bag taxwithin months. The comments by David Tyson, chief executive of the Packaging andFilms Association, follow a report published by The Telegraph yesterday, which revealed that customers could pay up to 10p a bagunder new legislation. In 2007, retailers voluntarily committed themselves to reduce theenvironmental impact of carrier bag use by 25% by the end of 2008.But The Telegraph quoted environment minister Joan Ruddock as saying: “We hopethere will be a voluntary agreement but the Waste Bill is likely toreceive Royal Assent in the autumn, which will include mandatorycharging for plastic bags.”Tyson told PRW: “There’s no proof that the use of carrier bags willdramatically reduce if they are charged for. The Governmentdoesn’t seem to want to listen. It’s more about beingperceived to be doing the right thing. “What is disappointing is despite the fact that when GordonBrown took over as Prime Minister, he made the statement it wasgoing to be a government without spin. It’s been almost theopposite.”A spokeswoman for the Department for Environment, Food and RuralAffairs (Defra) said the Government hoped plastic bag reductioncould be achieved on a voluntary basis. However, she added initiatives in Ireland and Marks andSpencer’s five pence bag charge (PRW.com 28 July) had proved successful in slashing single use bag numbers. She added: “We have asked retailers to tell us what theythink.”

Group Urges Statewide Plastic Bag Ban

The California Ocean Protection Council today released its plan toreduce and eliminate ocean litter. The plan calls for a statewideban on plastic bags and takeout containers. KPBS Reporter Ed Joycehas details. The Ocean Protection Council makes several recommendations toreduce trash in the ocean and other marine areas.Along with the plastic bag ban, the plan requires plastic packagingmanufacturers to take their products back and pay for properdisposal. The recommendations need legislation to become law.Dan Jacobson with Environment California says that's been a toughfight in Sacramento.Jacobson:

Well there's powerful special interests who are more interested injust making money than they are in protecting our beaches. And whenit comes to the plastics industry or the petrochemical industry, these are the folks that make the plastic that ends up in ouroceans and ends up finally washing up on our beaches.A marine research group says 60 to 80 percent of the world's oceanlitter comes from plastic.Thousands of seabirds, mammals and other marine wildlife are killedeach year from ingesting or becoming entangled in trash.Ed Joyce, KPBS News.

When green bags die ...

Yep they can be recycled Sandra - they're made of a plastic calledpolypropylene, and once they're worn out you just drop them off atyour supermarket's plastic bag collection centre.

But unlike regular polyethylene shopping bags that can get recycledhere in Austraila, green 'eco' bags have to be shipped overseas. It's not that we don't have the technology to recycle them - it'sthat we pay award wages. The polypropylene the green bags are made of can be recycled, butthe stitching that holds them together can't. So before any greenbag is recycled all those stitches have to be unpicked andseparated from the plastic. It's very labour intensive, and unlessyou're paying very low wages you can't hope to turn a profit fromthe recycled product.Which is where shipping the bags to China comes in. If Chineseworkers received the same pay as workers here do it wouldn't beprofitable to recycle the green bags there either, and they'd allend up in landfill. Talk about your ethical dilemma...So green bags save on landfill, energy and material - but only ifyou use them a couple of hundred times and then drop them off atyour supermarket for recycling. And because they look less likejellyfish we shouldn't see too many turtles choking on the onesthat make it into the wild.Just try not to build up a bigger collection of them than you canuse in one shopping lifetime.

There's more than one way of getting cash from plastic

ear, 80 per cent of which are handed out by supermarkets.

Although some discount chains, such as Aldi and Lidl, have beencharging for bags for several years, M&S became the first highstreet name to impose a levy in an attempt to change shoppers'behaviour. In May they started charging 5p for its food carrierbags in a bid to encourage customers to reduce the number of bagsthey use and to raise money for environmental projects. Gorgie CityFarm was one of the first to benefit from the scheme, with 25,000given for improvements.

The company claims the charge has led to its customers reducingtheir use of plastic bags by 80 per cent.

But even recycling carrier bags is not a new concept.

Waitrose was the first supermarket to introduce a plastic "bag forlife" in 1997. Sold to customers for 10p, and made from 100 percent recycled material, bags are replaced free of charge once theyare worn out. The upmarket chain and John Lewis both sell reusable, biodegradable, climate neutral jute bags. However, many customers still choose to use free disposable carrierbags. Earlier this year Sainsbury's rejected plans to charge forsingle-use bags but is promoting the use of its bags for life in 2007 it gave away 15 million free bags for life, resulting in aten per cent reduction in the number of bags used.n May, Morrisons also said no to plans for a plastic bag charge, insisting carrier bag use had already fallen by 13 per cent in thepast 12 months.Asda still provides free carrier bags, but the check-out assistanthas to be asked for them, and various types of bags for life arealso available for purchase.Tesco rewards customers with green clubcard points for using theirown bags a scheme which saw its bag usage cut by 15 per cent tofour billion between August 2006 and August 2007.Even furniture and DIY giants Ikea and B&Q have introduced chargesand Debenhams is looking into a similar scheme later in the year.Duncan McLaren, chief executive of Friends of the Earth Scotland, said: "All of this certainly should have an impact. Evidence showsthat charging for plastic bags can reduce their use by more than 90per cent."Edinburgh South Liberal Democrat MSP Mike Pringle has also welcomedthe shift and is hoping for a revival of his plans to introduce a10p levy on plastic bags.Mr Pringle's Member's Bill for an "environmental levy" on plasticbags failed to win the support of the then environment committee inSeptember 2006, and was then withdrawn. But following consultation earlier this year, the ScottishGovernment's draft Scottish Climate Change Bill is due to bepublished by the end of 2008, and Mr Pringle hopes his bag tax willbe incorporated. He said: "I hope the SNP will include my bill in their ClimateChange Bill.It is amazing some of the big supermarkets are not doing thisalready they could charge for plastic bags, donate the money tocharity, and still save a fortune on the cost of producing bags.Marks and Spencer are the first to jump in but I think othersupermarkets will follow suit  whether voluntarily or throughGovernment legislation. The demise of the plastic bag isinevitable."Based on the experience of Ireland, where a similar charge wasintroduced in 2002, Mr Pringle insisted the 10p tax could cutplastic bag use by up to 90 per cent.In the first three months after the Republic's "plastax" wasintroduced, shops handed out just over 23 million plastic bags about 277 million fewer than before. And in Australia a voluntary code for shops has seen the number ofplastic bags used there fall by some 45 per cent.Mr Pringle calculated the levy could earn Edinburgh more than800,000 a year to be spent on environmental projects. But the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) claimed the move wouldhit its members the hardest and said big supermarkets  fromwhich six out of ten city shoppers still leave with free plasticbags should be targeted rather than smaller traders who alreadyself-regulate their usage because of the amount it costs them toprovide bags.

A love-hate thing for plastic bags

We have also sued Los Angeles County for adopting a phased ban of plastic bags. We contend that the county based its action on aone-sided report that cherry-picked facts with the goal ofjustifying a ban.We hope the court will force the county to conduct an objectiveanalysis with the goal of finding the truth.Stephen L. JosephSan FranciscoThe writer is counsel for SaveThePlasticBag.com.It is amazing to see how detached from everyday needs not onlypoliticians but also newspaper people are. Most of us use thoseflimsy plastic shopping bags to put the daily trash in and take itto the bins.If we don't have them because of shortsighted decisions, we willhave to buy bags, and they will be the ones that end up in thedump. That will be another expense we'll have to face, not thatcity politicians or Times writers care.Marta S. Lucero Oxnard

I find it rather ironic that The Times wrote an editorial insupport of banning plastic bags in grocery stores. At least four ofthe seven days I go out to retrieve my edition of The Times, I findit swathed in plastic -- rain or shine. So please heed the oldadage, "Physician, heal thyself."Jackie Hansen Mission Hills Contrary to current wisdom, there are actually worthwhile things todo with those pesky plastic bags.I consider myself to be something of a "bag lady" and have asizable collection of colored plastic bags that I cut into stripsand use to crochet handy, attractive purses. Also, contrary to thestatement about "those flimsy shopping bags," they are practicallyindestructible. Just don't get them close to a hot surface.

I will hoard my bags jealously in case the concern about their rolein environmental pollution (which I certainly understand) serves todry up my future supply.Mele Bond Oak Hills Lessons of the past

Why Seattle's bag tax is a bad idea

THE July 8 public hearing on Seattle's proposed 20-cent tax ondisposable grocery bags and a ban on polystyrene foam foodcontainers felt like the Fremont Street Fair. People celebrated. There were speeches on the evils of plastic, singing grannieswaving reusable bags and evil bag monsters parading about thehearing room. In such an atmosphere, it was difficult for thecouncil and mayor to do anything other than say yes to theproposals. But there were good reasons to say no.Other jurisdictions, including Ireland, France, Italy, India,Australia, China and Los Angeles, tax or ban plastic bags, or planto. In every case, the overwhelming motive has been to stop aperceived serious litter problem.

In India, plastic bags exacerbated flooding by clogging drains andwere blamed for the death of cattle. Here we haven't hadbag-clogged drains and, so far, no dead cattle. We don't have aplastic-bag litter problem either. Look around the city. Finding alittered plastic bag can be difficult. Since June 1, I have takenmore than 30 five-mile walks in the city. I have seen six litteredplastic grocery bags and two of those had been pulled from a trashcan by crows.

We reuse these bags for myriad tasks: to carry groceries, line ourwastebaskets and garbage cans, distribute our garden zucchini toour neighbors, bring lunches to work and school, carry our gymclothes and wet swim suits, and pick up after our dogs. The taxwill induce us to use other bags and containers instead. InIreland, consumption of plastic trash-can liners alone doubled as aresult of its tax. When the currently free bags are taxed at 20 cents, we will buyreusable bags, probably by the millions. Most of these (generallymade in China) are made from woven or flat sheet fabricpolypropylene (type 5 plastic). It is extremely durable, but unlikethe bag it will replace (type 2 plastic), it is not generallyrecyclable. Furthermore, because each one of these reusable bagsrequires as much as 300 times more resources to produce than a"bad" bag, it is entirely possible that the bag tax will result inan increase in oil use and carbon emissions. The new bags eventually will be thrown away and will end up in thelandfill, thereby at least partially offsetting any reduction in"bad" plastic bag waste creditable to the tax. What about the ban on polystyrene foam food containers? It willcause a shift to much more expensive plastic and paper substitutes, which (like foam cups and plates) don't break down in landfills andare ugly when littered. The ban will not result in the disappearance of polystyrene foam. The vast majority of it will still be packed around all the thingswe order online. The city's own study shows that the ban will causehigher costs (69 percent more), more energy use (114 percent more),more carbon emissions (134 percent more) and more generated waste(140 percent more). What are we gaining here? These are expensive proposals estimated to cost households over$400 million over the next 30 years. Moreover, they ignore thesignificant changes that are occurring in bag and recyclingtechnology. Italy and France are exempting biodegradable andcompostable bags from their litter-focused bans. Shanghai movedaway from banning polystyrene foam and now recycles more than 70percent of its polystyrene foam food containers.Don't get me wrong. For 30 years I have been lecturing students inmy economics classes about how taxes can be used to abatepollution. I just don't see that the proposed program accomplishesanything. I want to see the city spend its political capital onpolicies that have real punch, such as taxes and tolls that movepeople into buses, or policies that encourage the use of hybridcars. Instead of polystyrene foam, consider banning gasoline lawnmowers, blowers and weed eaters — and also pesticides, chemical fertilizers and wood-burning fireplaces. If we must do something related to plastic bags we should stronglyconsider what New York City did this spring: promote recycling. These bags are as recyclable as bottles and cans. Seattleites willrecycle them much more with a bit of education and someencouragement.Peter Nickerson, a participant in the Northwest Economic PolicySeminar, has no financial tie to bag producers or the groceryindustry. Campaign aims to curb rise in listeria

RONAN McGREEVY LEAFLETS WARNING pregnant women of the dangers of eating certainfood have been produced in different languages because of a rise inthe number of listeria cases last year.

Listeriosis, which is caused by the listeria bacteria, ispotentially harmful to foetuses. It can pass across to the placentaand cause abortion, premature birth or a miscarriage.

Nine pregnant women in Ireland last year contracted the disease andtwo lost their babies.

Five were non-Irish nationals and there are fears that the warningsgiven to Irish-born women about not eating certain food stuffsduring pregnancy are not being passed on to foreigners living inIreland.

Safefood, the all-Ireland food safety promotion board, inconjunction with the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC),the State's specialist agency for the surveillance of communicablediseases, has now produced a leaflet in five languages: Polish,Latvian, Croatian, Czech and Arabic, warning of the dangers ofcontracting listeriosis.

GPs and baby clinics constantly warn about the dangers offoodstuffs such as moulded cheeses like Camembert, patés,pre-packed salads and cold meats.

While such foods do not normally pose a threat, in pregnant women, where the immune system is reduced, they can have potentiallycatastrophic consequences.

"There were 19 cases of listeriosis in Ireland last year. It seemslike a small number of cases, but the symptoms and consequences areso serious for pregnant women that they should all get the messageabout listeria," said Dr Thomas Quigley, the science and technicaldirector of Safefood.

"There is a lot of information available at the generalpractitioners and clinics that is in English, but we are concernedthat a number of non-Irish nationals are not getting thisinformation in this format.

"In addition, we have found that many pregnant women, who are notIrish, do not realise that medical services are free for them andso they avoid going to the doctor."

The recent increase in pregnancy-associated listeria cases hasprimarily affected women who have recently entered Ireland fromEastern Europe, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. These groups areparticularly at risk.

Dr Paul McKeown of the HPSC said: "Pregnancy is a time whenexpectant mothers take a lot of care with many aspects of theirlives. Simple measures such as ensuring that the fridge is in goodworking order with the temperature between two and five degrees, eating food that is well within its use-by date, so that harmfulbugs will not have had time to grow and practising good generalfood hygiene will reduce the risk of listeriosis."

The warning is given, not just to women who are pregnant but thosethinking of becoming pregnant, to avoid high-risk foods, such assoft cheeses, paté and pre-packed salads and coleslaw, until they have given birth.

The leaflet, which is entitled Listeria and Pregnancy, containsuseful information and advice on how pregnant women can protectthemselves and their babies throughout their pregnancy.

KFC and PETA Complaint

PETA the aminal rights organisation produced a caricature of KFC?sColonel Sanders covered in blood holding a chicken by the legs inone hand and pointing a knife at in the other. It was accomponiedwith the following text "KFC Cruelty The Colonel's Secret RecipeIncludes: Live Scalding, Painful Debeaking, Crippled Chickens PeTAKentuckyFriedCruelty.co.uk." The back of the Ad contained a numberof other pictures of chickens in distressing conditions andgraphic, detailed 'recipe instructions' for 'KFC Cruelty'.

However a little surprisingly the complaint was rejected. The ASAconsidered that PETA was setting out its own perspective and hadmade reasonable efforts to instruct its supporters not todistribute the leaflet in an untargeted way. Therefore, the ASAconcluded that the leaflet had not been targeted inappropriately. It wastherefore unlikely to be targeted at children

While KFC did not challenge the ruling nor was it one of thecomplainants it is a surprising decision and may reflect ASA'sreluctance to hinder freedom of speech.

Oh Dear, Andymg telling Scottish Patriots that they have aninferiority complex. How silly can a Unionist look?. As silly asAndymg.

In case the point leaflet has been missed Andy, we are the people whobelieve Scots are well capable of joining the internationalcommunity. You and your Unionist 5th columnists for LondonControlled New Labour just want to ensure the path is open for youto do a Marshall and Curran and retire as the New Labour Snouts inthe Trough Brigade down in your capital.

Looks like you lot will need to get a job or work for the dole.Fascist Chairman Brown has said he is getting it ready for you lot.

Now lets see, according to New Labours statistics (which must beright, as per the inflation rate of 3.8%, my erky) there aresupposedly 670,000 jobs available right at this moment for fitqualified workers. But then we find out that New Labours figuresfor the Unemployed are a whopping 3 million. Where exactly are themillions of jobs going to come from, when one considers that Brownthe Clown has bankrupted the group of countries that make up theUnunited Kingdom. After all he is such an influential power broker, who was completely ignored by the World Media on his grandstandingtour of the places where 1 million men women and children wereslaughtered for their Oil.

And you want Scots to continue to be part of this unholy allianceof the Empire of the United States. Forget it, if and when we areinvited to help free a country, we will take Doctors, Nurses,Drugs. Hammers and nails to build basic amenities for the localpeople, and we wont steal their resources.

Thats the Scotland I want to be part of. Not puppydog Unionists whoblindly follow their US Masters.

Now away and have a good look at yourselfs in the mirror, and getsome pride and self respect for yourself and your disadvantagedScottish People who are shafted by a Foreign Government everyday ofthe 300 years.

SNP criticised over leaflet gaffe

SNP criticised over leaflet gaffe 4 days ago Labour has criticised the SNP after it emerged a picture of twopolice officers was put on a leaflet distributed as part of theNationalists' Glasgow East by-election campaign.

The leaflets, which were posted through doors in the city, featuredScotland's Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill with the officers, oneof whose face was visible.

The Scottish Police Federation said the leaflet was "simply wrong"because it gave the impression the officer endorsed the candidate. The SNP said it had apologised to the officers involved and theleaflets had now been withdrawn.

Curran aiming to 'wipe smile off Salmond's face'

Another key factor will be the relative success of Labour and theSNP in ferrying their pledged voters to the polling stations fromthe time they open at 7am. For both parties, military-styleoperations will swing into action involving hundreds of partyactivists armed with details of which voters need transport andwhen they intend going to the polling stations.

Labour is planning a 5am letter-drop at 10,000 addresses in theconstituency urging voters to back their candidate, MargaretCurran, as “a fighter for the East End”. The operationwill be repeated at 6pm. The leaflet will also point out that MrsCurran is third on the ballot paper, to avoid confusion withFrances Curran, the Scottish Socialist Party candidate. Labour willalso target its leaflets at supermarkets, railway stations and carparks throughout the day.

The SNP will have 600 activists in the constituency and 200vehicles offering transport to polling stations. The Nationalistsalso plan a last-minute leaflet campaign.

The SNP says it has made about 60,000 telephone calls to votersduring the campaign. Labour's tally of telephone calls is about20,000. Both parties say that they have visited 40,000 households.

Yesterday saw the final shots fired in the short campaign, whichhas been downbeat in spite of the potential importance of theoutcome.

Mrs Curran for the first time launched what could be seen as apersonal attack on Alex Salmond,

the First Minister and SNP leader, accusing him of wanting to talkabout himself all the time. “I think a lot of people wouldthank me if I got to wipe the smile off his face,” she said.

Mrs Curran mounted her final push for support employing a soapboxin the manner of John Major when he led the Conservatives to anarrow victory in the 1992 general election. Almost harking back tothe way that political campaigns used to be conducted, shedelivered a stump speech standing on the box outside a bingo hall.An upbeat Ms Curran, Labour's fourth choice after three seniorparty figures rejected the candidacy, told campaign workers:“I promised that the Labour fightback was about to start. TheLabour fightback is under way and we are on our way.”

Labour has fought a localised campaign, concentrating onconstituency issues and barely mentioning Mr Brown. Its opponentshave concentrated on the Westminster Government's travails on theeconomy, and attacking the Prime Minister for not showing up in thecampaign.

Mr Salmond, who has been campaigning in Glasgow East almost daily, raised the stakes this week by predicting that a political“earthquake” was about to hit Labour in the seat. Askedwhether he still believed that, he said: “We believe we areneck and neck. The earthquake is coming and will arrive on time andon schedule ... the impact of an SNP victory would be totallyextraordinary.

Jeff Egan's Lindsay leaflet scandal case goes ahead

THE prosecution of three Labor figures who allegedly assaulted JeffEgan as they busted the Lindsay leaflet scandal is set to be put onhold until Egan's court case is resolved.

Egan, a former Liberal party powerbroker, and Gary Clark, thehusband of ex-Lindsay MP Jackie Kelly, will face a hearing inOctober charged with distributing fake election leaflets.

Four days before last year's federal election, the pair allegedlyhanded out pamphlets from a fake Islamic group, claiming Laborwanted the Bali bombers forgiven and mosques built in the keymarginal seat.

Egan and Clark were allegedly caught in the act by Labor sleuths, with the scandal broken exclusively by The Daily Telegraph two days before the election.

Both men have pleaded not guilty to breaching the electoral actover the incident on November 20.

But Egan launched a private prosecution for assault against LaborSenator Steve Hutchins and state ALP powerbrokers Luke Foley andWayne Forno.

He claims Foley, the party's assistant general secretary, andForno, the Transport Workers Union assistant state secretary, assaulted him on November 20.

They allegedly grabbed him by the arms and held him against a powerpole as his picture was taken.

Senator Hutchins aided and abetted the assault, Egan claims.

As both matters came before the Downing Centre Local Courtyesterday, Magistrate David Heilpern was told the three Laborfigures were witnesses in the prosecution case against Egan andClark.

Philip Boulten SC, for the three men, said the assault chargeswould be defended, and asked that they not proceed until the Eganand Clark case was resolved.

Mr Heilpern set that case down for hearing on October 31, with theassault matters to be mentioned on the same date.

According to a fact sheet tendered in the private prosecution byEgan's barrister, Egan and "another person were deliveringpamphlets into letterboxes" in North St Marys on the night ofNovember 20.

"The pamphlets were not properly authorised as required by theCommonwealth electoral act," the fact sheet stated. Share this article What is this?

Taiwan IC design houses face on-year revenue drop in 3Q

TV IC   Cage Chao, Taipei; Meiling Chen, DIGITIMES [Monday 14 July 2008]Amid unsatisfactory order visibility for July and August, playersin Taiwan's digital IC design industry are holding a conservativeview about their performance in the third quarter, with industryplayers predicting that revenues for MediaTek (MTK), NovatekMicroelectronics, and Integrated Technology Express (ITE) in thethird quarter will decline compared with the same period in 2007.Other fabless companies including ALi, Ene Technology, PrincetonTechnology Corporation (PTC), Avid Electronics, AME, and SunplusTechnology are also facing revenue pressure in the third quarter. While demand in the relatively healthy notebook segment is expectedto grow more than 20% in the third quarter, growth in the portableelectronics, digital music player, Portable Navigation Device(PND), handset, TV, and motherboard segments will be less than 10%,market sources estimated, as downstream players in those industriesfacing inventory issues since late in the second quarter.According to market watchers, low demand in 2008 is compounded bythe strong year companies had last year.In 2007, Taiwan IC design companies showed strong growth in thepeak season. Sales at MTK in the third quarter in 2007 reachedNT$24.3 billion (US$799 million), representing sequential growth ofalmost 40%. This year, although its revenue in the third quarter isexpected to rise 10-15% sequentially, market watchers say thatMTK's sales will only meet the levels it reported last year if thecompany receives urgent orders in August or September. The market watchers estimate that Novatek will see the greateston-year decline this quarter because its revenue in the thirdquarter last year year over NT$10 billion, and Novatek will faceslowing production of TFT panels, therefore it is almost impossiblefor the company to surpass its achievement in 2007. It will also behard for ITE to surpass its sales of NT$870 million sales in thethird quarter in 2007, as the company has only booked orders ofNT$210 million for July and August so far this year.

This time around, Blake Lively and Penn Badgley played the role of TomKat 2.0—a downgrade in our book, asfar as movie-star status goes. Chi Mei, MediaTek Support Normalized Fake Panel Makers

TV IC   Counterfeit panels, which are eroding the Chinese market, arebeating homemade flat panels on the strength of their low prices. Acomplete assembling industrial chain has been formed in southernhome appliance marketplaces like Shenzhen's Huaqiangbei, andGuangzhou's Dashatou. The counterfeit makers are formerly some DVD manufacturers andelectronic game console makers in Panyu City and Zhongshan Citythat aimed to shift their businesses. Finally, they all chose toassemble medium- and small-screen flat panel TVs.Later, some Shenzhen-based DVD decoder and core producers joinedthe assembly business, providing board technologies needed by theindustrial chain.Since 2006, after MTK became the world's largest flat panel TV chipmaker, and the LCD module plants of Chi Mei and Chuanghwa PictureTubes Ltd. settled down in Nanhai City and Shenzhen, some largecounterfeit producers began to normalize their production. In November of the year, Chi Mei, which has forayed into NanhaiCity, promoted CRT-to-LCD transformation services, providing20-inch and 26-inch LCD modules. In the market, there will be ademand of 16 million each year in the future. As LCD TVs'production technology is easier than that of CRT ones, LCD TVsgenerate higher profit. It is good news for hundreds of medium- andsmall-screen flat panel TV makers in the Pearl River Delta Area.Chi Mei's Phase I Project was put into production in 2007. However,it has not found large flat panel TV makers to buy its 9-millionannual output. TCL Corporation (SZSE: 000100), showed interest inthe project previously, has given up. So, counterfeit TV producersbecame Chi Mei's major customers. Moreover, the Phase II Project is said to be built, able to produce20 million LCD modules after being put into production in 2009. AsTCL, Skyworth Group, and Konka Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE: 000016)together only purchase less than 500,000 each year, Chi Mei againfinds counterfeit makers, which will purchase cheaper low-end LCDmodules through centralized procurement. Moreover, MTK's foray into the flat panel TV chip industry largelybenefits counterfeit producers. On June 25, 2008, professional research institute DisplaySearchopened the first-quarter flat panel TV chip shipment data, showingthat MTK had overtaken Trident Microsystems Inc. (Nasdaq: TRID),and become the world's top supplier of like products, with a marketshare of 19.53%. MTK's low-cost integrated TV chips provide newopportunities for counterfeit makers, which only need to purchasemodules and TV shells besides MTK's chips to finish assembly. With the support from Chi Mei and MTK, some normalized counterfeitmakers are expanding in the third- and fourth-tier markets.(USD 1 = CNY 6.83)From www.hexun.com, Page 1, Tuesday, July 15, 2008info@SinoCast.comMorning Coffee with TradingMarkets -- Free Newsletter

The flashdice are two 512-Mbit NOR devices from ST and one 2-Gbitsingle-level-cell (SLC) NAND component from Hynix. Completing thepackage are two Elpida 512-Mbit DDR2 SDRAM dice in a 70-nm process.Comparisons with another 70-nm Elpida device investigated bySemiconductor Insights (SI) show a series of differences. A quicklook at both devices identifies the ST package SDRAM as a low-powerversion--understandable, considering the placement of the dice in afive-stack package. SI professional consultant John Boyd, however, noted that "the Elpida SDRAM in the ST package [with the diemarking K5132CC] and the Elpida E5116AJBG-6E-E in SI's devicelibrary have an obvious difference in the direction of the routingwithin the die. The K5132CC die has the wires bonded to the outsideof the die, compared with the E5116AJBG, where the wires are bondedto the center. This difference is intriguing in that it revealsthat the Elpida device inside the ST package may be a custom IC."A cross-section of the Elpida devices uncovers the same identicalfour layers of metal in both designs. That could indicate thedevelopment of a new mask set by Elpida for the specific ST packagerequirement, which in turn would suggest a partnership between STand Elpida. Why use such a complex package for memory? Simply put, in aspace-constrained device like a cell phone, a multichip package isperfect for creating more room on a small circuit board. The MCP however, does have its disadvantages. Boyd noted that MCPdevelopment requires significant thinning at the wafer level, especially when five dice are required. That puts seriousconstraints on the manufacturing process, since these extremelythin wafers (thin enough in some cases to see the circuit designpattern on the back side) must be stress relieved after thinningand handled with specialized equipment. That leads to potentialyield problems, since breakage can reduce production yield. In addition to the need for testing each die to ensurefunctionality, testing must take place after packaging, with fivelevels of challenging wire bonds. Each level increases theprobability of failure, since it adds more steps and more time tothe manufacturing process. It's fairly obvious, though, that thesedisadvantages do not outweigh the advantage of space conservation.Given customers' expectations for ever more compact devices, manufacturers make sacrifices to meet that demand.North America catching up?After taking a look inside the Sharp 922SH and various other mobileproducts from Japanese vendors, it is fair to say that Japan'sdesigners still take pride in avant garde technology. But onecannot discount the designers in North America and Europe, ascompanies such as Apple and Nokia have shown new levels ofinnovation in products such as the iPhone and the N95. Theseproducts and many others being released in the upcoming yearsuggest the "wow factor" will be kicked up a notch. The real winnerin the competition to design the newest, "coolest" phone is theconsumer. Now, if Apple would only make a calculator watch that runs on waterand plays MP3s, I'd finally be able to one-up my friend Hiro.See related image: Inside the M39PNRA2A are two Elpida SDRAM dice, two ST NOR flash dice and a single Hynix SLC NAND flashAllan Yogasingam (allany@semiconductor.com) is a technology analyst for TechOnline, a division ofTechInsights. CCID Consulting Analyzes China鈥檚 Consumer IC Market Developm...

TV IC   BEIJING, July 8 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- CCID Consulting, China"sleading research, consulting and IT outsourcing service provider, and the first Chinese consulting firm listed in Hong Kong (HongKong Stock Exchange: HK08235), recently released its article onChina"s consumer IC market development trends. The market of China"s main electronic products grew steadily in2007, with a market value of 150 billion Yuan. In the next fiveyears, China"s consumer IC market will develop smoothly and themarket will maintain an upward momentum. However, the growth ratewill decrease due to lack of emerging applications. CCID Consultingforecasts that the compound growth rate in the next five years willreach 16.9%.Figure: Forecast on China"s Consumer IC Market Scale, 2008-2012http://www.ccidconsulting.com/upload/13315.jpgData Source: CCID Consulting, January 2008Decreasing Growth RateThe Consumer IC market develops the slowest among other IT fieldssuch as computer, network and communication, industrial control, automobile electronics, and other main applications fields. Themain reasons lie in sharp decrease of traditional black goodsproduction, which leads to the significant shrinkage of the relatedIC market. On the other hand, emerging consumer products such asdigital TV and digital photo frame have not form enough scale todrive market development, and digital consumer electronicsproduction develops steadily which leads to a stable digitalconsumer IC market. Besides, decreasing product price limits thegrowth rate of China"s consumer IC market greatly.Digital Consumer ICs Dominating Consumer IC MarketThe market of China"s traditional home appliance and smallappliance market, including that of color TVs, audio products, washing machines, refrigerators, air conditions, microwave ovens, fans, and electronic toys, has gone from a rapid growth stage to amature stage, which provides little support for the development ofconsumer IC market. On the contrary, as the acceleratingreplacement of digital consumer electronics to traditional productsand corresponding industry transfers to mainland, demands ondecoders, memories, high performance processors, graphicalprocessors, and other high end chips will grow rapidly, whichdrives the upgrading of China"s consumer IC market. As an important consumer product in the next five years, thepopularization process of digital TV will drive the development ofIC market. Rapid growth of digital TVs will promote a new round ofgrowth of digital TV ICs, embedded CPU, FPGA, memories and otherICs. Besides, set-top box, acting as a transition product fromanalog age to digital age, will be a leading product for digital TVindustry in the future five years.IC Price will First Decrease Before IncreasingIn the coming five years, the average price of China"s consumerIC market will first come down before going up again, that is,average price will decrease before 2008 and increase after 2008.This trend lies in two contrary influence factors. On one hand, with increasing market scale, the price of consumer electronicswill decrease, which bring pressures to IC providers. The price ofgeneral products and high inventory products will fluctuate mostly. On the other hand, IC providers will accelerate product upgradingto provide ICs with larger capacity, higher performance and morefunctions, which slows down the decrease of IC price. Consumerelectronics structure upgrading will drive the demand of higherprice ICs, which lifts the average price in the IC market. Drivingby these two contrary factors, the average price of China"sconsumer IC market will first go down before going up in thefuture. With a fast-growing consumer electronics market, China"s consumerelectronics manufactures will face more challenges in choosingproduct types, IC providers, developing solutions, technologyupgrades, and other issues. Besides, as new IC products emerge, consumer electronic manufacturers will need more support on producttypes, reference design, development tools providing, and R&Dstaff training.Facing increasingly fierce competition and globalization IC supplytrend, the diversion of industrial divisions in the industrialchain will become more professional. For chip providers, the futurelies in the construction of logistics and engineers, third partydesign plan partners, technology supporting capability, localization and business management.About CCID ConsultingCCID Consulting Co., Ltd. Modern lingerie designers have a lot more freedom to use the...

Multi Tone Fabric Modern lingerie designers have a lot more freedom to use their imagination than they used to. In the UK lingerie market, this opens up an arena of opportunities forproducers to make something wholly new and exciting. In lingerie, excitement is the name of the game. Camisoles with frilly panties, leather teddies with fishnet stockings, backless panties of Lycra...all stimulate the senses. Some prove stimulating in other ways. Some styles of lingerie don't have to excite. Corsets, bustiers and garters, for example. They control. They enhance. They sometimes shock. But as other lingerie, they all get attention. In the UK, lingerie is often sold alongside swimwear and other mainstream items. Corsets, bras and bodices can also be found inthe same area, along with men's lingerie. Styles in some smaller boutiques are made to measure. With all of the body sizes and type sin the UK, this can mean getting a customized fit. One of the most popular fabrics used to make lingerie is silk. It begins cool to the touch but warms the body, keeping the wear ernice and snug. Of course, for those who don't have the extra money and time that silk demands, satin is a related fabric. It is also smooth. And soft. But it is slightly less expensive then silk. But it is not as sturdy, due to the construction differences between the two fabrics. Other popular fabrics for UK lingerie are mesh and lace. Cotton is a newer option that promises comfort. Velvet and leather are popular fabrics for erotic lingerie. Lycra, abody-hugging material rather like spandex, is becoming a success for those wanting a sporty and slimming effect. The kind of lingerie consumers look for depends on their purpose for the clothing. Those whose primary goal is to gather theattention of a lover will find success with leather teddies or asheer camisole set. For a romantic lead, lace and satin negligeesor a simple chemise might do the trick. For comfortable eveningwear, cotton gowns afford warmth and comfort. And then thereare those styles of lingerie that can serve a multitude ofpurposes. Bras, bustiers and corsets can lend support and can alsoserve as a turn on. The baby doll, a style of lingerie that becamepopular in the 1950s, is a versatile piece that usually covers (but not always) the torso and ends at the hips. It normally comes with matching panties. Sheer material is often used to heighten a man'slibido. Traditionally, UK lingerie is produced for mass consumption. Therefore, the primary colors of lingerie are black, white, and red. Black denotes mystery and allure. At the other end of thespectrum, white represents purity and innocence. A lot of women like to play on that irony during sexual encounters. And red hasalways been a symbol of boldness and sexuality. Which color buyer schoose to buy depends on these facts and some knowledge of skin tone and color compatibility. Fair-haired women look best in pastelshades. Brunettes look good in bold colors, like purple and red. Red-heads impress with earth tones and other Earth-inspired colors, like greens and blues. 2008-06-18 13:40:24

Designer Samant Chauhan prepares to enter the big league

Printing On Fabric Designer Samant Chauhan prepares to enter the big league, with aline-up of prestigious international shows, and Bolly wood A few years back when his collection debuted at the India Fashion Week, Samant Chauhan, the son of an Indian Railways employee, lethis clothes do all the talking. His collection Kamasutra wasculled from traditional textiles and techniques of his native town Bhagalpur in Bihar and came with the stamp of ingenuity rather than street-smartness. Now Chauhan, comfortably settled in Delhi for thepast four years, walks and talks fashion. He has found a loyal basein London Fashion Week, has been invited to prestigious fairs and shows across Europe, and his retail chain has spread all over Europe. But the 28-year-old is clearly ready for more. Up next is amaiden appearance at the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris inSeptember, followed by the Tranoi Fair, one of the most prestigioustrade fairs. Then theres another appearance at the London Fashion Week, besides a desi week in Delhi. Theres still so much to dothat I think it will still take me a while to think of myself assomeone who has arrived, he shakes his head. His simple silhouettes and almost monochromatic palette might havehit the right chord with buyers, but Chauhan maintains that itshis ability to translate his surroundings into his work that makesit stand out. I work with tussar, a fabric thats very common inmy state, but I believe in mixing up techniques and giving a fresh look, he says. So his new collection for the forthcoming show swill see him work on the indigenous fabric with various organictechniques of dyeing and washing. I am trying to improvise on the popular technique of bagh printing in Madhya Pradesh. For a changethis year, my clothes will have more colour, he adds. In the best traditions of Indian fashion, Chauhan is also ready forBollywood, with three projects lined up. He is reluctant to give out the names yet but the deals will be finalised over theweekend and he seems suitably enthusiastic about the diversion from the ramp. The offers have been coming for about a year now, and since I am a bit more settled now than before, I thought it wouldbe interesting to try my hand at it and see if I am any good, hesays. We have a feeling he would be.
